New race weekend, this time in Paraguay. My first time in this country.
The journey from Rio to Asunción was very long and even more draining. All the athletes doing both races ended up on the same flight. I arrived 3 hours before my flight and had to wait standing up for 3 hours just to check in my baggage. It was extremely tiring and left me showing signs of exhaustion.
I was also sick the night from Wednesday to Thursday. Is it related? I don’t know…
For the race itself, what a joy to complete a nice swim. After a good start, I didn’t let up and kept going with everything I had. By the end of the first swim lap, I saw I was in the front positions coming out of the butterfly. The second swim lap went really well. I was with the leaders. I came out touching the front group. There was a long stretch to run to get to the bike park. Getting on the bike: I had no energy, I couldn’t push the pedals or put any power down. Was it due to the illness a few days prior? I’m not sure. In any case, one thing is certain: it was very frustrating because the guys I was with on the bike were in the breakaway and ended up on the podium. I don’t know if I could have kept up at my best, but I really wanted to try.
I’m sure I’ll get there for the next race!
After that complicated cycling start, I found myself in a second group where we were many people and collaboration was difficult. We lost time, a lot of time to the breakaway. In total, we put the bike down more than three minutes behind after the 40km cycle.
The running start was incredibly fast. The level of the other competitors is insane. I clocked a time of 30’30” over the 10km and finished “only” 18th. From my side, I started more cautiously, aiming for a linear effort so I wouldn’t crash. That effort paid off. By the end of the third running lap, I was still 29th, but I put in a big final push to finish 18th.
I’m really satisfied with this race. I validated my best race time over the distance. My current fitness level surely caused me to miss the breakaway, or rather, not have the energy to hang on. It’s built brick by brick, and it takes time. The progress is there.
Now it’s time for some rest before getting back into training to prepare for the end of the season!
