I am fortunate to report that this was my second visit to Rio de Janeiro. It is a dream location for a competition. Furthermore, I was lucky to be accompanied by my girlfriend, who was able to take leave to join me.
We arrived on Monday evening. Following a wait of over 2.5 hours at customs—solely to determine the value of my bicycle, which was unusual—we finally settled into our hotel room in a two-street area adjacent to Copacabana beach. We enjoyed ourselves until Thursday, when I trained in the mornings and we spent the afternoons sightseeing and walking. As it was only the end of winter there, the temperatures were more agreeable than those currently in France.
I felt some tension leading up to the race. I swam a distance that was beyond my current ability, and I spent time away from the water. The cycling portion was intense as I struggled to join the main group ahead. We ultimately found ourselves in a second large group containing nearly all the competitors. This pace continued until the start of the run.
The run itself was highly intense. I ran 14’35″ and finished only 20th in this World Cup. This was a mixed and frustrating result.
My focus now is on next weekend in Asunción, Paraguay, for the next World Cup.
